Marseille's Music, Art and Antiques

On request

Discover Marseille's vibrant cultural scene! The oldest city of France has shaken its French Connection past to re-invent itself as the thriving European capital of the South! Explore by day the medieval streets of the Old Port, the antique dealers of Quartier Rostand and the modernist architecture of Le Corbusier... Enjoy an exclusive visit to the Opera House and its costume department... In the evening watch glorious sunsets over the sea and discover the city's programme of International Music and Dance: Spring is the ideal time to reacquaint yourself with the charms of the Mediterranean!

Thursday evening: meet for drinks at the hotel and an informal introduction to our tour followed by dinner in a local restaurant.

Friday: walking tour of Quartier du Panier, the lively old city centre, mixing 17th century classical buildings with contemporary art galleries and local colour. Enjoy a coffee break at Bar des Treize Coins, a favourite spot with film directors. Discover Quartier Edmond Rostand, erected in the 19th century in the wake of Paris' Haussmann. It is now a vibrant centre for art galleries dealing in artefacts from 18th century walnut Provencal furniture to 1950s' artwork. The afternoon includes an exclusive visit to the Opera House and its costume department. In the evening enjoy the opera or ballet...

Saturday: morning stopover at Le Corbusier's Cité Radieuse, the architect's best known modernist garden city; en route to the village of Aubagne, pottery centre and birthplace of writer and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol. Meet contemporary ceramists in their studios before driving back via the stunning white Calanques (clay cliffs). Evening at leisure.

Sunday: drive to L'Estaque: this tiny fishing village revolutionised the art of painters Paul Cézanne, Auguste Renoir, fauvist Raoul Dufy and cubist Georges Braque. This walking tour brings alive and incorporates the favourite haunts and locations of all these artists.
Tour ends by 12noon.
